a green oasis in an industrial setting

Growing up in the West Island, where wild spaces are abundant, I’ve never paid much attention to the Canadian Pacific’s green space, right next to where I live. I’ve used the space as a shortcut to the Metro station. Other times, in the summer, I’ve walked its paths to avoid the heat of my loft.

Last Spring, the city’s project to revitalize St-Viateur Street East and the creation of the Sprout Out Loud! gardening project helped perceive this vacant lot in a totally different way: I suddenly realized how important the space is to our community. Keeping this green oasis is essential to the Mile End’s environmental equilibrium, which is mostly composed of brick, asphalt, and cement.

Last summer, while in the vacant lot, I saw ground hogs, hares, and fireflies. Yes, folks, fireflies in Montreal! Isn’t it wonderful? Then, when you start paying attention to the trees and plants, you can discover so many beautiful, different varieties there! It’s a chunk of paradise for us all and for the dogs that roam the terrain freely.

Now that I’ve gardened in this space, that I’ve cleaned it up, and that I’ve got to know more about its trees and flora, the lot is part of my life and I hope that we can preserve and maintain its wildness.

un oasis de verdure au sein d’un décor industriel

Originaire du West Island, où les espaces sauvages sont nombreux, je n’ai jamais eu d’attention particulière pour le champ du Canadien Pacifique, situé à deux pas de chez moi. Je l’ai souvent traversé pour me rendre plus rapidement au métro. À d’autres moments, je m’y suis promenée pour réfléchir et fuir la chaleur de mon loft.

Le printemps dernier, le projet d’aménagement de la rue St-Viateur Est et la création du projet Pouvoir aux Pousses! m’ont fait voir ce terrain vacant d’un autre œil. J’ai rapidement compris son importance pour notre voisinage. Cet oasis de verdure est essentiel à l’équilibre environnemental de notre quartier qui est construit, en grande partie, de béton et d’acier.

L’été dernier, j’y ai vu des créatures tels des marmottes, des lièvres, et des mouches à feu. Des mouches à feu en pleine ville? Oui! C’est magnifique! Sans compter la flore et les arbres. Ce lieu est un coin de paradis pour nous tous, et pour les chiens qui y courent librement.

Maintenant que j’ai travaillé la terre de ce lieu, que j’ai nettoyé sa surface, que j’ai appris à connaître ses arbres et ses fleurs, le champ fait partie de ma vie et je souhaite que nous le conservions dans toute sa splendeur.
